₹1 Crore Extortion Plot in Dhanbad Takes a Twisted Turn, Nephew Accused of Framing Uncle

Police say a land dispute may have driven an alleged plan to send the accused’s maternal uncle to jail by planting his bank details in an extortion message

Dhanbad. What initially appeared to be a straightforward case of an alleged ₹1 crore extortion demand and a threat to shoot a government official has taken an unexpected turn in Dhanbad, with police claiming that the real target of the alleged conspiracy was not the official—but a family member.

Police have arrested a young man from Pandarpala, alleging that he deliberately used his maternal uncle’s bank-account details in a threatening message sent to the Dhanbad Circle Officer. Investigators suspect that the move was intended to divert suspicion towards the uncle and ultimately have him arrested in connection with the extortion case.

According to police, the alleged motive was linked to an ongoing land dispute within the family.

Threat Message Triggered Investigation

The case came to light after a threatening message was reportedly sent to the Circle Officer’s mobile phone on September 14.

According to the complaint, the sender demanded ₹1 crore and allegedly threatened the officer with fatal consequences if the money was not paid.

The Circle Officer subsequently approached Dhanbad police on September 24, following which investigators began examining the mobile number used to send the message.

Rather than limiting the investigation to the threatening number, police also examined the financial details mentioned in the message.

The Bank Account Became a Crucial Lead

The message reportedly contained details of an SBI account associated with a person named Raju from Rajganj.

When police questioned Raju, he denied sending the threat and offered to have his mobile phone examined.

During questioning, investigators reportedly learned that Raju had an existing land dispute with his nephew. That information prompted police to examine whether the bank-account details had been deliberately inserted into the extortion message.

The subsequent inquiry, police said, revealed that the SIM card used to send the threatening message was not being directly used by Raju.

Police Allege the SIM Was Part of the Setup

According to investigators, the SIM card was registered in another person’s name and eventually came into the possession of the accused from Pandarpala.

Police allege that the accused used the SIM to send the extortion threat and intentionally inserted his maternal uncle’s bank details into the message.

The alleged objective, investigators say, was to make the uncle appear connected to the extortion attempt and push the police investigation in his direction.

Land Dispute at the Centre of the Alleged Conspiracy

Police suspect that the alleged plan was connected to the family’s dispute over land.

According to the preliminary investigation, the accused allegedly wanted his maternal uncle to face arrest and remain entangled in the criminal case for some time. Investigators suspect that such a situation could have helped the accused strengthen his position in the underlying land dispute.

The police inquiry, however, reportedly uncovered inconsistencies between the bank-account information and the actual use of the mobile number and SIM card.

The person whose details allegedly appeared in the threatening message consequently became a key witness in the investigation rather than the primary accused.

Technology Helped Unravel the Alleged Plan

The case highlights the importance of tracing the complete chain behind a digital threat.

Instead of treating the bank-account details as conclusive evidence against the account holder, investigators reportedly examined the mobile number, SIM ownership, actual user and financial information together.

That broader technical inquiry allegedly led police towards the nephew and away from the person whose account details had been inserted into the message.

Allegations Yet to Be Tested in Court

The arrest marks an important development, but the allegations remain part of the police investigation.

Police are continuing to question the accused and examine the electronic and other evidence connected with the case. The precise circumstances surrounding the SIM card, the threatening message and the alleged land-dispute motive will ultimately have to be established through investigation and judicial proceedings.

The case also serves as a reminder that information deliberately planted in a digital communication may not necessarily identify the person who actually sent it. Investigators often need to establish who controlled the device or SIM, who created the message and what motive may have existed behind the alleged act.

For now, Dhanbad police are treating the incident as an alleged ₹1 crore extortion threat intertwined with a family land dispute and an attempt to implicate a relative.
