Kairana SP MP says women who rise in public life are often judged first on their character, appearance and identity rather than their abilities
Shamli, September 22. (SDNA) The journey of a woman in politics is not limited to winning an election or securing a public office. Once women enter public life, they often have to confront social attitudes, gender-based prejudices and questions surrounding their personal identity. Samajwadi Party MP from Kairana, Iqra Hasan, highlighted these challenges while sharing her experiences during an interaction with women.
Iqra Hasan said that she is a Muslim woman as well as a member of the OBC community, and therefore has to face challenges at multiple levels. She said such struggles were not new to her and had continued in different forms even after entering politics.
‘When a woman rises, questions are raised about her character instead of her work’
The SP MP said that when a man progresses in public life, his clothing or personal life is generally not made the focus of public discussion. However, when a woman establishes herself and moves ahead, questions are often raised about her character, clothes, identity and marital status instead of her work and achievements.
She said this becomes a means of weakening women by shifting attention away from their professional abilities and towards their personal lives.
Women representatives face a different set of challenges
Iqra Hasan also spoke about the treatment of women public representatives within the administrative system. She said that when a woman representative gives instructions to an official, there are occasions when the official does not respond to her directly and instead seeks clarification from a subordinate employee.
According to her, the issue may appear minor on the surface, but it reflects a deeper mindset about women’s leadership and their authority to take decisions. She said society needs to move beyond the perception that leadership and decision-making authority are primarily the domain of men.
‘First they try to stop a woman, then they attack her character’
Referring to her own experiences, the MP said that several methods are used to discourage women from advancing in public life. One of the easiest ways, she said, is to raise questions about their character.
She stressed the need to distinguish a woman’s political role from her personal life. A woman’s political and ideological positions should be assessed on the basis of her work and performance rather than her clothing or personal identity, she said.

Iqra Hasan’s remarks have triggered renewed discussion on social media about women’s participation in politics and the challenges they face in public life. Although women’s representation in politics has increased, the challenges they continue to face in public life indicate that numerical representation alone is not enough. Real social change will come when women’s work, leadership and decision-making abilities are assessed independently of their identity and personal lives.
