Party prepares to contest all 117 seats on its own; organisational expansion and drug menace at the centre of its strategy
Chandigarh, September 22. (SDNA) The political landscape in Punjab is undergoing significant changes ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. While the Aam Aadmi Party government is preparing for a return to power, the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party are working to strengthen their respective political bases. Against this backdrop, the BJP’s role has assumed greater significance as the party seeks to establish an independent political presence in the state.
Punjab has traditionally not been an easy electoral ground for the BJP. For several years, the party’s electoral strength in the state was closely linked to its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal. The BJP is now pursuing a strategy aimed at expanding its organisation and electoral base independently. In August 2026, Punjab BJP in-charge Satish Poonia said the party would contest all 117 Assembly seats on its own in the 2027 elections.
BJP’s Position in Electoral Numbers
One of the key challenges before the BJP is the gap between its vote share and its Assembly performance. In the 2022 Assembly elections, the party secured 6.6 per cent of the vote and won only two seats. In contrast, its vote share in Punjab rose to around 18.56 per cent in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, although the party failed to win a single Lok Sabha seat in the state.
These figures raise the question of how effectively the BJP can convert its Lok Sabha vote support into Assembly seats. The distinction is important in Punjab, where local candidates, rural-urban equations and regional issues can play a different role in Assembly elections compared with parliamentary polls.
Organisational Expansion a Major Priority
The BJP is seeking to move beyond its traditional urban base and strengthen its organisation across rural Punjab as well as at the state level. The party is focusing on worker training, regional meetings and activation of its organisational network down to the booth level.
The decision to field candidates in all 117 constituencies also means that the BJP will need to develop local leadership, election-management structures and constituency-specific social equations. This is an area where Assembly election strategies can differ substantially from those used in Lok Sabha polls.
Drug Menace Emerges as a Major Political Issue
The problem of drug abuse has remained a prominent issue in Punjab’s political discourse for years. Ahead of the 2027 elections, the BJP has made it an important component of its political campaign. In September 2026, the party launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, with plans to reach all 117 Assembly constituencies.
The campaign focuses on issues including drug trafficking, supply networks, illegal assets and rehabilitation.
The issue has also triggered political exchanges between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has questioned the BJP’s campaign and referred to drug-related cases associated with Gujarat’s Mundra port. The BJP, meanwhile, is positioning its anti-drug campaign as a major element of its electoral strategy in Punjab.
Focus on BJP-Akali Dal Equation
The long-standing relationship between the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal could also influence the political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections. Speculation about a possible alliance between the two parties has surfaced periodically. However, the BJP has publicly maintained its current position of contesting all 117 seats independently.
The Akali Dal has traditionally had a stronger base in rural Punjab, while the BJP’s influence has historically been more pronounced in urban areas. Whether the two parties eventually enter into any electoral understanding therefore remains an important question in the state’s political landscape. For now, the BJP has reiterated its intention to contest the elections on its own.
Congress and AAP Among BJP’s Key Challenges
The BJP’s electoral challenge is not limited to the Aam Aadmi Party. The Congress has an established organisational base in Punjab, while the Akali Dal is attempting to rebuild its traditional political support. New political formations such as ‘Waris Punjab De’ are also part of the state’s evolving electoral landscape.
Political activities by different parties in Baba Bakala in August 2026 also highlighted the possibility of a multi-cornered contest in the state.
For the BJP, an important strategic challenge will be to convert its increased vote share into Assembly seats. This would require not only the appeal of the national leadership but also strong local organisation, acceptable candidates and a clear understanding of regional issues.
Rural Punjab to Be a Major Test
The BJP’s expansion in Punjab is likely to face a significant test in rural areas. Against the backdrop of changes in the party’s political perception in the state following the farmers’ movement, the BJP will have to strengthen its outreach among rural voters.
Issues such as farmers’ concerns, employment, drugs, law and order, electricity, water and the state’s financial condition could feature prominently in the election discourse. Political reports have also identified drugs, employment, farmers’ issues, law and order and the state’s financial situation among the major themes likely to shape the upcoming electoral debate.
Test of BJP’s Journey from Organisation to Power
The BJP’s position in Punjab cannot be assessed solely on the basis of its Assembly seat tally. Despite its limited Assembly presence in 2022, the party recorded a significant rise in its vote share in the state during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It has now set a target of contesting all 117 Assembly seats and building a statewide organisational network.
In this context, the 2027 Assembly election will be a test not only of the BJP’s electoral performance but also of its effort to establish itself as an independent, statewide political organisation in Punjab.
The Aam Aadmi Party government is likely to highlight its record in office, while the Congress and Akali Dal are working to consolidate their respective political bases.
Ultimately, the direction of the Punjab election will depend on several factors, including local candidates, regional issues, rural-urban dynamics, organisational strength of the political parties and the final choices of voters. The 2027 Assembly election will therefore be significant in understanding the changing political structure of Punjab.
