Former Union Minister Named In-Charge of Two States Weeks After Joining BJP’s National General Secretary Team
New Delhi, September 23. (SDNA) — The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced a major organisational reshuffle, appointing new state in-charges and co-in-charges across all 28 states and eight Union Territories.
Former Union Minister and BJP national general secretary Smriti Irani has been assigned organisational responsibility for Haryana and Chhattisgarh. The appointments were approved by BJP national president Nitin Nabin as part of a wider restructuring of the party’s organisational network.
The new arrangement places senior party leaders in charge of state units and is expected to define coordination between the BJP’s central leadership and its state organisations in the coming period.
Smriti Irani Gets Dual State Responsibility
Irani’s appointment comes only a few weeks after she was inducted into the BJP’s national team as a general secretary. She will now oversee organisational affairs in both Haryana and Chhattisgarh.
Her responsibilities are expected to include coordination with state-level party units, organisational programmes and communication between the central leadership and the respective state organisations.
For Chhattisgarh, Siddharth Shambhu has been appointed co-in-charge alongside Irani.
Wide-Ranging Changes Across States and UTs
The BJP’s latest announcement covers the organisational structure of all 36 states and Union Territories.
Among the prominent appointments, Vinod Tawde has been made in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, with several co-in-charges assisting him. Harish Dwivedi has been assigned Bihar, while Vinay Sahasrabuddhe will oversee Delhi. Tarun Chugh has been given charge of Gujarat and Satish Poonia has been assigned responsibility for Jammu and Kashmir as well as Punjab.
Sunil Bansal has been assigned organisational responsibility for Telangana and West Bengal, while Ram Madhav has been given charge of Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand.
Focus on Organisational Coordination
The appointments come as the BJP continues to reorganise its state-level structure. The new in-charges will work with state units on organisational matters and maintain coordination with the party’s national leadership.
The BJP has not publicly detailed a separate reason for assigning individual leaders to specific states. The official announcement primarily sets out the new organisational responsibilities and the accompanying co-in-charge structure.
Irani’s Role Expands Within Party Organisation
Smriti Irani served as a Union minister and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amethi in 2019. She lost the Amethi constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha election to Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma.
Following the 2024 election, Irani remained active in BJP organisational and political activities. Her appointment as national general secretary in 2026 and the subsequent allocation of responsibilities for Haryana and Chhattisgarh mark an expansion of her formal role within the party organisation.
The latest reshuffle, however, is an organisational decision and does not by itself establish any particular future electoral outcome.
New Organisational Framework Takes Shape
With appointments now announced across all states and Union Territories, the BJP has put in place a new network of state in-charges and co-in-charges under Nitin Nabin’s leadership.
For Haryana and Chhattisgarh, Smriti Irani will now be the central organisational point of contact for the party, with Siddharth Shambhu assisting her in Chhattisgarh. The functioning of the new arrangement will depend on coordination with the respective state units and the party’s national leadership.
