New Delhi, September 23 (SDNA): Candidates who have completed Class 12 and are preparing for government jobs have a new recruitment opportunity in the Indian Railways. The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have issued a short notification for the NTPC Undergraduate Recruitment 2026, under which 1,688 vacancies are to be filled across various non-technical posts.
The application process is expected to begin in October 2026, while the closing date is scheduled for November, according to the preliminary recruitment information. Candidates are advised to carefully check the detailed notification once released before submitting their applications.
Which Posts Are Covered?
The NTPC Undergraduate recruitment includes several non-technical positions, including:
- Commercial-cum-Ticket Clerk
- Junior Clerk-cum-Typist
- Accounts Clerk-cum-Typist
- Train Clerk
The vacancies will be distributed among different Railway Recruitment Boards and categories as specified in the official recruitment notification.
Class 12 Qualification Required
Candidates applying for the undergraduate-level posts are required to have passed Class 12 from a recognised board. The preliminary information mentions a minimum of 50 per cent marks in Class 12, with applicable relaxations for certain reserved categories.
For the typing-related posts, candidates will also have to meet the prescribed computer typing standards.
Applicants for Junior Clerk-cum-Typist and Accounts Clerk-cum-Typist posts are required to achieve a typing speed of 25 words per minute in Hindi or 30 words per minute in English.
Age Limit
The reported age requirement for the recruitment is 18 to 30 years. Candidates belonging to eligible reserved categories will receive upper-age relaxation according to applicable government rules.

Application Process Expected in October
According to the preliminary schedule, the online application window is expected to open in October 2026, with applications likely to remain open until November.

How Will Candidates Be Selected?
The recruitment process is expected to include multiple stages. Depending on the post, candidates will have to qualify in computer-based examinations, a typing skill test where applicable, document verification and the prescribed medical examination.
CBT-1
The first computer-based examination is expected to consist of 100 questions:
- General Awareness – 40 questions
- Mathematics – 30 questions
- General Intelligence and Reasoning – 30 questions
The examination duration is expected to be 90 minutes. Negative marking will apply as per the recruitment rules.
CBT-2
Candidates qualifying through the prescribed first-stage process will be considered for the second computer-based examination.
CBT-2 is expected to contain 120 questions, distributed as follows:
- General Awareness – 50 questions
- Mathematics – 35 questions
- General Intelligence and Reasoning – 35 questions
Negative marking will also apply in this stage according to the notified examination rules.
Typing Skill Test
Candidates applying for Junior Clerk-cum-Typist and Accounts Clerk-cum-Typist positions will have to qualify in a computer-based typing skill test.
The typing test is generally qualifying in nature, meaning candidates must meet the prescribed speed requirement to proceed further in the recruitment process.
Document Verification
Candidates who qualify in the relevant examination and skill-test stages will be called for document verification. Educational certificates, identity documents, category certificates and other required records will be checked at this stage.
Medical Examination
Before appointment, shortlisted candidates will have to undergo a medical examination according to the medical standards prescribed for the relevant railway post. Candidates meeting the required medical standards will proceed further in the appointment process.
What Should Candidates Do Now?
Applicants can use the period before the application window opens to organise their documents, including their Class 12 marksheet, photograph, signature, identity proof and category-related certificates, wherever applicable.
Those preparing for the CBT examinations can begin structured preparation in Mathematics, General Awareness and Reasoning. Candidates targeting the typing-based posts can also start practising Hindi or English computer typing to meet the prescribed speed requirement.
