US President Donald Trump’s highly ceremonial welcome for Chinese President Xi Jinping during his Washington visit has triggered a fresh debate over American diplomacy, with Indian strategic affairs expert Brahma Chellaney questioning Trump’s approach towards authoritarian leaders.
Xi arrived in Washington on Wednesday for a three-day state visit, marking his first visit to the US capital in more than a decade. Trump personally received Xi and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan at Joint Base Andrews, an unusual diplomatic gesture that was followed by a formal state arrival ceremony at the White House.
Chellaney Questions Trump’s Diplomatic Approach
Reacting to the reception, Chellaney argued in a post on X that the optics of Trump’s welcome reinforced criticisms previously directed at the US president over his dealings with authoritarian governments.
Chellaney described Trump’s foreign-policy style as one in which he projects a tough negotiating posture but can adopt a more accommodating approach when dealing with powerful adversaries. His comments were directed at Trump’s broader diplomatic record rather than the Xi visit alone.
A Carefully Choreographed US-China Engagement
The welcome comes at a sensitive point in US-China relations. Washington and Beijing remain divided over trade, technology, Taiwan and other geopolitical issues, even as both governments seek to maintain dialogue and prevent tensions from escalating.
