India captain reaches 200 off just 117 balls against West Indies, becomes only the second Indian to score multiple ODI double centuries

Guwahati, September 30, 2026. India captain Shubman Gill produced a remarkable batting display against the West Indies in Guwahati, becoming only the second Indian batter after Rohit Sharma to register more than one double century in ODI cricket.

Gill completed his second ODI double hundred in just 117 balls, setting a new record for the fastest double century in men’s ODI cricket. He had previously scored 208 against New Zealand in 2023.

Rohit Sharma remains the only other Indian with multiple ODI double centuries, having achieved the feat three times.

First Indian to score ODI double century while chasing

Gill’s latest landmark carries additional significance because it came during a run chase.

He became the first Indian batter to score a double century while chasing in an ODI. Before this innings, India’s ODI double centuries had all been recorded while batting first.

The only previous men’s ODI double century during a chase was Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup.

Gill breaks fastest-double-century record

Gill’s 200 came in only 117 deliveries, moving him to the top of the list for the fastest ODI double century.

The previous leading performances included:

  • Shubman Gill — 117 balls vs West Indies, Guwahati, 2026
  • Ishan Kishan — 126 balls vs Bangladesh, Chattogram, 2022
  • Glenn Maxwell — 128 balls vs Afghanistan, Mumbai, 2023
  • Pathum Nissanka — 136 balls vs Afghanistan, Pallekele, 2024
  • Chris Gayle — 138 balls vs Zimbabwe, Canberra, 2015

Gill finishes unbeaten on 223

Gill continued his assault after reaching the double century and remained unbeaten on 223 runs.

The innings placed him third on the list of the highest individual scores in men’s ODI cricket. Rohit Sharma holds the record with 264, while New Zealand’s Martin Guptill is second with 237.

Gill also established a new benchmark for the highest individual ODI score by an Indian captain, surpassing Virender Sehwag’s 219.

New record for an Indian in an ODI run chase

Gill’s unbeaten 223 also moved him past the previous Indian record for the highest individual score while chasing in an ODI.

MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli had earlier shared the Indian mark with scores of 183 against Sri Lanka and Pakistan respectively.

Gill’s 223 therefore became the highest individual ODI score by a batter while chasing, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s 201 against Afghanistan.

The Guwahati innings adds another major chapter to Gill’s growing ODI record book, with the India captain combining a rapid double century with several long-standing statistical milestones.
