NIVRAHA FOUNDATION Eyes Wider Health Insurance Access for Lower-Income Families

Nationwide health-insurance awareness drive being explored; foundation may engage with insurers to identify affordable ₹2–3 lakh coverage options and support eligible families with premium assistance

New Delhi | SDNA

A medical emergency can quickly become a financial emergency for a family. Hospitalisation, diagnostic tests, medicines and treatment expenses can consume years of savings, particularly for households living on limited or moderate incomes.

While health insurance can provide an important financial safety net, affordability, lack of awareness and limited understanding of policy conditions continue to keep many families away from adequate medical coverage.

Against this backdrop, NIVRAHA FOUNDATION is looking at a social initiative aimed at expanding awareness about health insurance and exploring ways to help economically weaker and middle-income families access affordable health-protection options.

From Insurance Awareness to Practical Assistance

The proposed initiative is not limited to spreading information about medical insurance. The foundation may also explore practical mechanisms through which eligible families can be guided towards suitable insurance options.

This could include engaging with health-insurance providers and authorised entities to identify plans that offer reasonable coverage at premiums that may be more manageable for ordinary households.

The foundation’s broader objective would be to help citizens understand their choices before purchasing a policy rather than simply encouraging them to buy a particular insurance product.

Focus on Affordable ₹2–3 Lakh Coverage

As part of the proposed effort, NIVRAHA FOUNDATION may explore health-insurance options offering Sum Insured of around ₹2 lakh to ₹3 lakh, particularly for families looking for basic financial protection against hospitalisation and major medical expenses.

However, the actual premium, eligibility, benefits, exclusions, waiting periods and claim conditions would remain subject to the terms and underwriting criteria of the respective insurance provider.

The foundation would therefore focus on awareness, facilitation and access, while the insurance contract itself would remain between the policyholder and the authorised insurer.

A Community-Supported Premium Assistance Model

One of the more significant ideas under consideration is creating a mechanism through which eligible financially weaker families could receive partial assistance towards their health-insurance premiums.

Such assistance could potentially be supported through membership contributions, voluntary donations and other permissible sources of social support available to the foundation.

If implemented under a transparent framework, this model could create a community-based approach in which those who are able to contribute help expand health-security access for families that may otherwise struggle to afford insurance.

Membership and Donations Could Strengthen the Initiative

The proposed model could encourage socially conscious citizens to become members of NIVRAHA FOUNDATION and contribute voluntarily towards its social objectives.

Funds received through permissible membership contributions and donations could, subject to applicable rules and the foundation’s internal eligibility framework, be considered for supporting health-insurance premiums of selected beneficiaries.

The broader philosophy would be:

“Community contribution for stronger health protection.”

Such an approach could turn health-insurance awareness into a wider social-security initiative.

Taking Insurance Literacy Beyond Major Cities

Health-insurance awareness cannot remain confined to metropolitan areas.

Families in villages, small towns and semi-urban communities can also face severe financial pressure when unexpected medical expenses arise. Yet many people may still have limited knowledge about how health insurance actually works.

An awareness campaign could therefore address basic but critical issues such as:

  • What health insurance covers and what it may not cover.
  • How to understand Sum Insured.
  • How premiums are determined.
  • What Cashless Hospitalisation means.
  • How to check the insurer’s hospital network.
  • Waiting periods and exclusions.
  • Claim procedures and documentation.
  • Policy renewal and continuity of coverage.
  • The importance of reading policy terms before purchase.

The Cheapest Policy Is Not Always the Best Policy

Affordability is important, but low premium alone should not become the deciding factor.

A policy must also be evaluated for its coverage, exclusions, hospital network, limits, waiting periods, claim conditions and other applicable terms.

NIVRAHA FOUNDATION’s proposed awareness approach could therefore encourage citizens to compare policies carefully and understand the product before making a financial commitment.

Preventing Medical Emergencies from Becoming Financial Disasters

For a middle-class or economically weaker family, a major hospital bill can affect household savings, education expenses, business capital and everyday financial stability.

Adequate insurance coverage, subject to the policy’s terms and conditions, can help reduce the direct financial burden of eligible medical expenses.

This makes health-insurance literacy an important component of broader financial awareness.

A Possible Bridge Between Citizens and Health Protection

The proposed role of NIVRAHA FOUNDATION could be significant if it develops as a facilitator and awareness platform, rather than as a substitute for regulated insurance providers.

By connecting citizens with appropriate information, exploring affordable insurance options with authorised providers and creating a transparent mechanism for premium assistance to eligible families, the foundation could attempt to address three major barriers at once:

Lack of awareness + affordability challenges + difficulty in accessing suitable information.

Health Security Should Not Depend Only on Income

The ability to protect one’s family against medical expenses should not become a privilege available only to financially stronger households.

A coordinated effort involving insurance providers, social organisations, financial institutions, local communities and informed citizens could help make basic health protection more accessible.

NIVRAHA FOUNDATION’s proposed initiative represents an attempt to explore such a model, with the emphasis on awareness, affordability, transparency and community participation.

The Bigger Goal: Make Health Protection More Accessible

Health insurance cannot prevent illness, but appropriate coverage can potentially help families manage eligible medical expenses and protect their finances during difficult times.

The challenge now is to take reliable information, affordable options and possible financial assistance closer to the people who need them most.

The real measure of a health-insurance initiative is not how many policies are sold, but how many families become better informed, financially protected and capable of making the right healthcare-financing decision.
