Health Department Issues Firecracker Safety Advisory Ahead of Festive Celebrations

Parents urged to supervise children during fireworks; citizens advised to follow safety precautions and seek immediate medical attention in case of burns or eye injuries.

Jabalpur, November 3, 2026.

With festive celebrations approaching, the Madhya Pradesh Health Department has issued a public safety advisory to prevent accidents and health complications caused by firecrackers. Citizens have been advised to exercise caution before, during and after fireworks and follow appropriate safety measures.

The department has recommended bursting firecrackers only in open and safe areas, maintaining adequate distance from buildings, vehicles, dry vegetation and combustible materials. People should wear cotton clothing and closed footwear while handling fireworks.

Children should never be allowed to burst crackers without adult supervision. Parents should also ensure that children do not carry firecrackers in their pockets.

Essential Safety Rules While Handling Firecrackers

  • Keep a bucket filled with water or sand near the fireworks area.
  • Light only one firecracker at a time.
  • Maintain a safe distance between the face, hands and burning crackers.
  • Never hold flowerpots, spinning wheels or bombs in your hands. Place them on level ground before lighting.
  • Never launch rockets by hand or in a horizontal direction.
  • Do not cover firecrackers with tin containers, glass bottles or closed utensils.
  • If a firecracker fails to explode, do not approach it immediately. Wait at least 20 minutes before pouring water over it to neutralise it.
  • Never throw firecrackers towards people or animals.

Firecracker Smoke and Noise Can Affect Health

The smoke and harmful chemical substances released by firecrackers can aggravate respiratory and cardiovascular problems. People suffering from asthma and bronchitis should take extra precautions and remain indoors during fireworks.

The department has also advised citizens to avoid excessively loud firecrackers, as exposure to high noise levels may adversely affect hearing.

After celebrations, used and unexploded firecrackers should not be left scattered in open spaces. They must be disposed of safely, and hands should be thoroughly washed with soap and water.

Immediate First Aid in Case of Accidents

In case of burns, the affected area should immediately be cooled under clean running water at normal temperature. Rings, watches and bangles should be carefully removed before swelling develops.

If an eye injury occurs, the affected eye should not be rubbed, and medical advice should be sought immediately. Serious burns, deep wounds or blast-related injuries require prompt treatment at the nearest hospital.

The Health Department has appealed to residents to celebrate festivals responsibly and prioritise the safety of their families and surrounding communities.

Madhya Pradesh Hospitals on High Alert Ahead of Diwali; Burn Units and Ambulance Services to Remain Prepared

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav directs district collectors to inspect emergency facilities; hospitals instructed to ensure round-the-clock medical services and essential resources.

Special awareness drive against carbide guns; emergency referrals and air ambulance arrangements to be strengthened.

Jabalpur, November 3, 2026.

In view of the possibility of firecracker-related accidents during the upcoming festive season, the Madhya Pradesh government has directed healthcare institutions across the state to strengthen their emergency preparedness.

Following the instructions of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, all District Collectors have been asked to inspect burn wards and burn units operating in government district hospitals and medical colleges and ensure that these facilities remain fully functional.

The Public Health and Medical Education Department has issued detailed instructions to government hospitals and medical colleges to ensure the availability of beds, medicines, medical equipment and adequate healthcare personnel.

Additional Chief Secretary for Public Health and Medical Education, Mrs. Rashmi Arun Shami, has issued comprehensive guidelines in this regard.

24-Hour Availability of Doctors and Medical Facilities

Hospitals have been instructed to ensure round-the-clock availability of doctors, nursing officers and paramedical staff.

Essential medicines, medical supplies and diagnostic equipment must be available to treat burn injuries, eye injuries, injuries to hands and legs, hearing-related damage and respiratory complications caused by firecracker smoke.

Regular inspections of burn wards will be conducted to assess bed availability, medical resources and staffing arrangements. Government and private hospitals, along with medical colleges, have also been instructed to review the condition of admitted burn injury patients every day.

Carbide Guns Pose Serious Risks to Children

The department has issued a special warning against the use of illegally manufactured carbide guns.

Explosions from these devices can scatter small plastic and metal fragments, causing severe injuries to the eyes, face and skin. Acetylene gas released during the process can also cause fire-related accidents and burns.

Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to injuries involving the eyelids, conjunctiva and cornea, which may result in permanent vision loss.

The public will be sensitised about the dangers of carbide guns and unsafe fireworks.

Emergency Referrals and Ambulance Services to Be Strengthened

Hospitals have been instructed to provide immediate first aid and stabilise seriously injured patients before referring them to higher medical centres.

Referral documents must contain complete details of treatment provided, diagnostic tests conducted and further medical requirements. The receiving hospital must be informed in advance, and continuous follow-up of referred patients must be ensured.

Names and mobile numbers of emergency-duty doctors, ambulance drivers and paramedical personnel must be prominently displayed in hospitals.

The 108 ambulance fleet must remain fully operational with oxygen supplies and essential equipment. With approval from the District Collector, patients may be referred to hospitals in other districts or states. Air ambulance facilities may also be used for critically ill patients as per applicable rules.

Immediate Care and Specialist Treatment for Eye Injuries

If sparks, gunpowder, chemicals or metal and plastic particles enter the eyes during fireworks, people should avoid rubbing the affected eye or attempting to remove foreign objects themselves.

Eye drops should not be used without medical advice.

In case of chemical exposure, the affected eye should be rinsed with clean water or normal saline for 15 to 20 minutes. It should then be lightly covered with sterile gauze, followed by immediate consultation with an eye specialist. Pressure must not be applied to the eye.

For corneal burns, foreign objects or serious eye injuries, specialist examinations and necessary diagnostic facilities, including slit-lamp examination, X-rays or CT scans, should be arranged.

Patients with serious eye injuries must be referred immediately to the nearest government medical college after receiving initial treatment.
