Senior eye specialists Dr. Himanshu Gaikwad and Dr. Anushka from ASG Eye Hospital, located in Shubhash Nagar, Ujjain, said the initiative aims to spread awareness about eye safety during Diwali and ensure prompt specialist care for children in the event of an injury.
They highlighted that cases of firecracker-related eye injuries tend to rise during Diwali, with children accounting for a significant number of those affected. Injuries to the cornea and other delicate structures at the front of the eye are among the common complications. Without timely treatment by an eye specialist, some serious injuries can lead to permanent vision impairment. The first few hours following an injury are particularly crucial for effective treatment and recovery.
As part of the campaign, eligible children will have access to first aid, emergency eye care, medicines and surgical treatment wherever medically necessary. However, optical products, including spectacles, are excluded from the initiative. Terms and conditions will apply. Families seeking guidance or details of their nearest participating centre can call the dedicated helpline at 1800 1200 111.
Dr. Vikas Jain, Group COO of ASG Hospital Limited, said that most firecracker-related eye injuries among children can be prevented through appropriate precautions. However, if an accident occurs, reaching an eye specialist without delay can make a significant difference to the child’s recovery and vision.
He added that necessary arrangements have been made across ASG centres nationwide to handle eye injury cases during the festive period. He urged parents not to experiment with home remedies or attempt self-treatment if a child’s eye is injured, and instead seek immediate medical attention by contacting the hospital helpline.
Dr. Ganesh Pillai, Regional COO (Madhya Pradesh) of ASG Hospital Limited, said Diwali is a festival of sharing happiness with family members and neighbours, and children are naturally enthusiastic about bursting firecrackers. This makes parental supervision especially important. He advised families to keep children under close watch, maintain a safe distance from firecrackers and use appropriate protective eyewear. Simple safety measures, he noted, can help prevent serious accidents.
Dr. Pillai further stated that children suffering from firecracker-related eye injuries will receive the necessary treatment at participating ASG centres under the campaign. He also shared that during last year’s Diwali celebrations, more than 500 children with eye burns and other firecracker-related eye injuries were treated at ASG centres.
