The central question being discussed in political circles is whether the BJP will contest the next Assembly elections under Mohan Yadav or consider a leadership change before 2028. The names of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Kailash Vijayvargiya, Narendra Singh Tomar and Prahlad Singh Patel are being mentioned in discussions about possible political equations.
However, the BJP’s central leadership has made no official announcement regarding a change of Chief Minister. At present, these discussions should therefore be treated as political speculation rather than confirmed developments.
Government Faces Political and Administrative Challenges
The Mohan Yadav government has been facing criticism from opposition parties on several issues. In June 2026, media reports raised questions about land transactions involving companies associated with the Chief Minister’s family in Ujjain. The reports claimed that substantial land purchases had taken place after 2023.
The Congress demanded an independent investigation, while the BJP described the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. The Chief Minister’s Office also rejected allegations concerning land purchases by the Chief Minister and his family after he assumed office.
Another issue that attracted political attention was the removal of houses belonging to tribal families in Kosmi village of Sehore district. Former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan publicly intervened, demanding rehabilitation and compensation for affected families, along with action against officials found responsible. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said that the matter would be investigated.
These developments triggered discussions not only about the government’s administrative functioning but also about coordination between senior BJP leaders and the state government. The opposition has been using these issues to question the government’s accountability. For the BJP, responding to criticism while maintaining unity within the organisation has become increasingly important.
Datia By-election: A Warning Sign for the BJP Organisation?
The Datia Assembly by-election, held on July 30, 2026, emerged as an important political setback for the BJP. Congress candidate Kunwar Ghanshyam Singh defeated BJP nominee Ashutosh Tiwari by 6,016 votes. Singh secured 66,757 votes, while the BJP candidate received 60,741 votes.
Candidate selection was a significant factor in the political backdrop of the election. Former MLA and former Home Minister Dr. Narottam Mishra was considered a prominent contender for the BJP ticket, but the party chose not to nominate him. Reports of dissatisfaction among some local leaders and party workers subsequently emerged.
Following the defeat, the BJP dissolved its Datia district organisation and constituted a committee to review the reasons behind the result. The Congress described the outcome as an indication of public dissatisfaction with the BJP government. For the BJP, however, the result raised questions about candidate selection, local factionalism and discontent among party workers.
A single by-election cannot, by itself, determine the popularity of a government across an entire state. Nevertheless, the Datia result has given the BJP an opportunity to reassess its organisational preparedness ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
Jyotiraditya Scindia: Could His Role in State Politics Expand?
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who has considerable influence in the Gwalior-Chambal region, has periodically featured in discussions about the Chief Minister’s post.
His decision to leave the Congress and join the BJP in 2020 brought a major political shift in Madhya Pradesh. The resignation of MLAs supporting him led to the fall of the Kamal Nath government and paved the way for the BJP’s return to power.
Scindia was also considered among the possible contenders when the BJP selected its Chief Minister in December 2023. However, the party chose Dr. Mohan Yadav for the state’s top post and assigned Scindia an important role in the Union government.
If the BJP considers a leadership change in Madhya Pradesh in the future, Scindia’s political influence and support base in the Gwalior-Chambal region could become relevant factors. However, in November 2023, Scindia himself had stated that he was not in the race for the Chief Minister’s post. His elevation to the state’s top position therefore remains speculative.
Kailash Vijayvargiya: Organisational Experience Could Be an Advantage
Senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya has extensive political experience at both state and national levels. His influence in Indore and the Malwa region, combined with his experience in party organisation and election management, makes him one of the prominent figures in Madhya Pradesh BJP politics.
His name also featured in discussions about possible Chief Ministerial candidates in 2023. He is currently a minister in the Mohan Yadav government.
If the BJP explores a change in state leadership, Vijayvargiya’s political experience and organisational network could become relevant to the discussion. However, there has been no official confirmation of any formal claim by him to the Chief Minister’s post.
Narendra Singh Tomar: A Senior Leader with Organisational Experience
Narendra Singh Tomar, the Speaker of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, is another experienced BJP leader. His political career includes significant organisational responsibilities and ministerial roles in the Union government.
His name was also discussed among possible Chief Ministerial contenders in December 2023, but the BJP subsequently entrusted him with the responsibility of Speaker.
If the party considers promoting a leader with substantial organisational and administrative experience, Tomar could feature in political discussions. Nevertheless, given his present constitutional responsibility as Assembly Speaker, any suggestion of his becoming Chief Minister remains speculative.
Prahlad Singh Patel: Experience in Both State and National Politics
Prahlad Singh Patel is among the BJP leaders who have held important responsibilities in both national politics and Madhya Pradesh. His name also surfaced during discussions about possible Chief Ministerial candidates in 2023.
His administrative experience and political base in the state could make him relevant in future leadership calculations. However, the BJP has not officially declared him a potential candidate for the Chief Minister’s post.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan: Speculation About a Return, but National Politics Remains His Priority
Former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan continues to enjoy a significant political support base in Madhya Pradesh. Popularly known as ‘Mama’, he led the state government for several years before the BJP selected Mohan Yadav as Chief Minister in 2023.
Following his departure from the state leadership, Chouhan was given important responsibilities in the Union government, including the portfolios associated with agriculture and rural development.
His public intervention in the matter involving tribal families in Sehore brought him back into the spotlight of Madhya Pradesh politics. Some political observers have viewed the development in the context of coordination between the state government and the party organisation.
However, during an interaction with journalists in Dewas on August 1, 2026, Chouhan reportedly ruled out a return to Madhya Pradesh politics and said that serving the country as a Union Minister remained his priority.
Thus, despite continuing speculation about his possible return, his publicly stated preference remains focused on his responsibilities at the national level.
Jagdish Devda and Rajendra Shukla: Important Players in Regional Political Balance
Deputy Chief Ministers Jagdish Devda and Rajendra Shukla also hold important positions in the Madhya Pradesh government.
Devda is a senior BJP leader from the Malwa region and handles the Finance portfolio. Shukla, who has a strong political presence in the Vindhya region, is responsible for Public Health and Medical Education.
If the BJP considers major changes in the leadership or Cabinet in the future, regional representation and social balance could be important factors in its decision-making. This is why the political roles of both Deputy Chief Ministers also attract attention.
However, the party has not officially named either of them as a potential candidate for the Chief Minister’s post.
What Are the BJP’s Options Before the 2028 Elections?
At present, two broad political possibilities are being discussed for the BJP in Madhya Pradesh.
Option One: Continue with Mohan Yadav’s leadership.
The party could retain confidence in Dr. Mohan Yadav, strengthen the government’s performance, address administrative concerns and work to resolve dissatisfaction within the organisation.
Option Two: Introduce a leadership change before 2028.
The BJP could consider changes in the state’s political or administrative leadership before the next Assembly elections and promote another senior leader. In such a situation, organisational experience, regional influence and political balance could play an important role.
However, a decision on leadership is unlikely to depend solely on the Datia by-election, opposition allegations or the personal ambitions of individual leaders. The BJP’s central leadership would need to consider the government’s performance, organisational strength, social representation and regional equations before taking any such decision.
Conclusion: Will the BJP Fight the Next Election Under Mohan Yadav?
The debate over the Chief Minister’s position in Madhya Pradesh has certainly intensified, but there is currently no official indication of an impending leadership change.
The Datia by-election defeat, the Ujjain land controversy, the issue involving tribal families and the public activities of senior BJP leaders have added new dimensions to the political debate.
Scindia’s regional influence, Vijayvargiya’s organisational experience, Tomar’s political seniority, Prahlad Patel’s administrative background and Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s public support base all form part of the possible political equations within the BJP. At the same time, Mohan Yadav remains the Chief Minister, and the party has announced no change in his leadership.
The key question now is whether the BJP will prepare for the 2028 Assembly elections under the existing leadership or experiment with a new political face before the polls.
Whatever the intensity of speculation surrounding the Chief Minister’s chair, the final decision rests with the BJP’s central leadership. For now, the biggest question in Madhya Pradesh politics remains: Will Mohan Yadav continue to lead the state until 2028, or will the BJP introduce a new face before the next Assembly elections?
