Mumbai Shocker: Man’s Body Found in Freezer More Than Four Years After Death

Police investigating why the 78-year-old’s body was allegedly preserved at a Malad daycare centre; family’s documents and claims under scrutiny

Mumbai, September 29, 2026 (SDNA) — A bizarre case has surfaced in Mumbai’s Malad area after police recovered the body of a 78-year-old man from a freezer at a daycare centre in Kurar Village. According to police, the man died of cancer on June 9, 2022, and his body had allegedly remained preserved at the centre for more than four years.

The discovery was made after residents complained of a strong foul smell in the area on Monday evening. When the Kurar police team reached the centre and inspected the premises, officers reportedly found the body inside a freezer.

Family allegedly believed in preserving the body

According to police sources, the deceased had a son who lives in Mumbai and a daughter who is based in the United States.

Police sources said the daughter was deeply attached to her father and reportedly believed in the concept of reincarnation. It is alleged that she and her brother decided to preserve their father’s body rather than carry out the final rites.

The family reportedly paid around ₹1.60 lakh every month for keeping the body at the centre.

Police have also been shown documents relating to the death, including a death certificate and papers submitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Investigators are currently examining the authenticity and details of these documents.

Centre had reportedly been sealed three months ago

The daycare centre is located in the Konkani Pada area of Kurar Village, Malad. According to sources, the BMC had reportedly sealed the premises around three months ago.

Former corporator Vinod Mishra has raised questions over why the centre was allegedly not thoroughly inspected when the sealing action was carried out.

Foul smell initially suspected to be from a dead animal

Local residents reportedly began noticing a strong smell from the area on Sunday night. Initially, some people suspected that a rat or another animal might have died nearby.

As the smell intensified throughout Monday, the matter was reported to the police. Officers subsequently entered the centre and discovered the body inside the freezer.

Police examining preservation process

The Kurar police have taken possession of the body and begun the necessary legal proceedings. Statements are reportedly being recorded from the centre’s operators, the deceased’s family members, BMC officials and local residents.

Police are also seeking expert assistance from doctors at Cooper Hospital to understand the condition of the body and determine how it had been preserved for such a prolonged period.

The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances under which the body was kept at the centre, the role of the facility and whether all required legal and municipal procedures were followed.

For now, police are examining the family’s explanation, the documents submitted by them and the circumstances surrounding the preservation of the body for more than four years.
