New Delhi, September 29, 2026 (SDNA): India’s wireless telecom market continued to expand in August, with Reliance Jio recording the highest addition of new mobile subscribers, according to the latest data attributed to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The combined number of mobile and 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) subscribers rose from around 130.62 crore in July to 131.22 crore by the end of August 2026. The increase indicates continued growth in wireless connectivity across the country.
Jio Adds 24.01 Lakh Mobile Subscribers
Reliance Jio emerged as the largest contributor to the increase in mobile subscribers during August. The company added approximately 24.01 lakh new mobile users during the month.

Bharti Airtel followed with around 21.10 lakh additions, while Vodafone Idea (Vi) added nearly 5.06 lakh subscribers. State-run BSNL also recorded growth, adding approximately 4.92 lakh new mobile users.
MTNL, however, witnessed a decline, losing around 5,879 subscribers during the month.
Overall, India’s mobile subscriber base increased by more than 55 lakh users in August.
Mobile Subscriber Base Crosses 129 Crore
According to the figures cited in the report, India’s mobile subscriber base increased from approximately 1,287.92 million in July to 1,293.43 million in August, representing a monthly rise of around 0.43%.
The country’s wireless tele-density also improved, rising from approximately 91.33% to 91.69% during the month.
5G FWA Segment Also Expands
The Fixed Wireless Access segment, which provides broadband connectivity through wireless networks, also registered growth.
India’s total 5G FWA subscriber base increased from approximately 1.321 crore in July to 1.345 crore in August, adding around 2.45 lakh customers in a single month.
Reliance Jio remained ahead in the 5G FWA segment as well, with its subscriber base reaching approximately 94.19 lakh. The company added more than 1.48 lakh FWA users during August.
Bharti Airtel’s 5G FWA subscriber base stood at around 40.34 lakh, with more than 96,000 new customers added during the month.
Together, Jio and Airtel accounted for the overwhelming majority of the reported 5G FWA subscriber base.
Growth Seen Across Most Telecom Circles
The August figures indicate that subscriber growth was recorded across almost all telecom circles. Himachal Pradesh was the only circle mentioned in the report where the number of subscribers declined, while the remaining circles registered growth.
The latest numbers highlight the continuing expansion of both mobile connectivity and wireless broadband services in India, with telecom operators competing for new customers across conventional mobile services as well as emerging 5G-based broadband offerings.
Jio-Airtel Competition Intensifies
The August data also reflects the growing competition between the country’s major private telecom operators. While Jio recorded the largest monthly addition in mobile subscribers, Airtel remained close behind. Both companies are also expanding their presence in the rapidly developing 5G FWA broadband market.
With mobile subscriptions now exceeding 129 crore and 5G FWA adoption continuing to rise, India’s telecom market is increasingly moving toward a combination of high-speed mobile connectivity and wireless home broadband services.
