PMK–TVK Talks Stir Political Speculation in Tamil Nadu; Cabinet Role at Centre of Buzz

Reports suggest possible political understanding between Vijay’s party and PMK, but no formal alliance has been announced

CHENNAI, October 1, 2026: Political speculation is intensifying in Tamil Nadu over a possible understanding between Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), with reports suggesting that discussions have reached the question of possible representation for PMK in the state government.

However, there has been no formal announcement of a PMK–TVK alliance. In fact, PMK Assembly floor leader Sowmiya Anbumani on Wednesday dismissed reports that the party would join the TVK Cabinet after the upcoming by-elections, calling them a rumour.

The reports have nevertheless generated considerable political discussion, particularly because PMK is currently associated with the AIADMK-BJP alliance while TVK is leading the state government.

PMK maintains neutral position in upcoming bypolls

The speculation has gained momentum after PMK announced that it would not support any political party in the October 6 by-elections in Madurantakam and Dharapuram.

According to reports, PMK’s decision is being viewed by political observers as significant because the party had contested the 2026 Assembly election as part of the AIADMK-BJP alliance.

The Indian Express reported that conversations between PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss and Vijay’s political adviser John Arockiasamy have been taking place, with discussions reportedly extending to the possibility of a broader political understanding.

Cabinet berth reports remain unconfirmed

Reports have suggested that PMK leaders could be considered for positions in the TVK-led government if a political understanding is reached.

Some reports specifically mentioned Sowmiya Anbumani and PMK MLA A. Ganesh Kumar as possible names.

However, these reports have not been officially confirmed. Sowmiya Anbumani has publicly rejected the claim that she is set to join the TVK Cabinet, saying people should not pay attention to such reports.

A separate report by DT Next, citing earlier media reports, had also said that Sowmiya was being discussed for a possible ministerial position if PMK extended support to the TVK government.

TVK’s Assembly position provides the backdrop

The political discussions are taking place against the backdrop of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly results.

TVK won 108 of the 234 Assembly seats, two seats short of the 118-seat majority mark on its own. The party subsequently formed a government with support from alliance partners. The Election Commission-based results show PMK winning four seats.

The upcoming by-elections in Madurantakam and Dharapuram are therefore being watched closely as part of the evolving political equation.

The TVK’s official election data also records its 108-seat tally in the 234-member Assembly.

PMK’s relationship with BJP remains an important factor

PMK’s existing political relationship with the BJP and AIADMK alliance is one of the central issues in speculation over any possible future understanding with TVK.

The Indian Express has reported that PMK’s current position and its decision to remain neutral in the upcoming bypolls have fuelled questions about the party’s next political move.

Any formal move towards TVK would therefore have implications for PMK’s existing political equations. At present, however, there is no official confirmation that the party has decided to leave its existing alliance.

VCK factor adds another layer

The possibility of PMK entering the TVK-led political arrangement has also drawn attention because of the presence of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) in the government.

VCK leader Vanni Arasu has publicly reiterated his party’s opposition to an alliance involving PMK, according to a report by The Times of India.

This makes any potential PMK–TVK understanding a matter involving not just two parties, but also the existing coalition structure supporting the state government.

No final decision yet

For now, the reported negotiations remain at the level of political discussions and speculation. The October 6 by-elections could provide further political signals, but any change in alliance arrangements or Cabinet composition would require an official announcement.

The immediate focus remains on whether PMK maintains its present neutral position or eventually enters into a formal political understanding with the TVK-led government.
