‘Why fight through followers? Let it be a direct contest,’ says the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, inviting the Samajwadi Party chief to contest from the holy city
(SDNA) Balrampur: Political temperatures in Uttar Pradesh are rising ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issuing a direct electoral challenge to Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. Yogi said he was ready to contest from Ayodhya if Akhilesh chose the temple town as his constituency, setting the stage for a fresh political exchange between the BJP and the opposition party.
The challenge has sparked speculation about whether Akhilesh will accept the invitation. However, no decision by the Samajwadi Party leader to contest from Ayodhya has been confirmed in the information available.
Development Projects Provide the Backdrop for Political Attack
Yogi Adityanath made the remarks during a programme in Balrampur on Saturday, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 78 development projects worth more than ₹803 crore.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister responded to Akhilesh’s earlier remarks about contesting elections from Ayodhya. He said his visits to the city were primarily connected with overseeing development works and improving civic facilities rather than preparing for an electoral contest.
Yogi described Ayodhya as a sacred centre of faith and emphasised that the city’s development and religious significance must be protected.
Ayodhya Is About Faith and Development, Says Yogi
The Chief Minister highlighted Ayodhya’s cultural and religious importance, arguing that there should be no negligence in the city’s development.
He also criticised the previous Samajwadi Party government over electricity supply, cleanliness and security arrangements in Ayodhya. Yogi claimed that basic facilities had been inadequate under the earlier administration and asserted that the city was now progressing towards what he described as the ideal of Ram Rajya.
His remarks linked the city’s transformation with the broader political narrative of his government, which has placed Ayodhya’s religious heritage and infrastructure development prominently on its agenda.
‘Why Fight Through Followers? Face Each Other Directly’
The sharpest part of Yogi’s address was his invitation to Akhilesh Yadav to enter the electoral contest from Ayodhya.
“Why fight through followers? The contest should be face-to-face,” was the central message of his remarks.
By offering to contest from the same constituency, Yogi sought to turn the exchange into a direct political challenge ahead of the next Assembly elections.
The Chief Minister also accused the Samajwadi Party of being soft on criminals and mafia elements. The remarks reflected the continuing confrontation between the BJP and the SP over law and order, governance and their competing political claims in Uttar Pradesh.
Will Akhilesh Yadav Accept the Challenge?
Yogi’s statement has placed Ayodhya back in the spotlight as a potential focal point of the state’s electoral politics. A direct contest between the two prominent leaders would carry considerable political significance, given Ayodhya’s religious importance and its place in the BJP’s political narrative.
For now, however, the proposal remains a challenge issued by the Chief Minister rather than a confirmed electoral arrangement. Akhilesh Yadav’s response and any formal announcement regarding his constituency choice remain awaited.
With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, exchanges between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party are likely to intensify. Whether the Ayodhya challenge develops into a genuine electoral possibility or remains political rhetoric will depend on the decisions and responses of the leaders involved.
