A sudden double tragedy in Barkheda village under Sihora police station limits in Jabalpur has raised questions over the circumstances surrounding the death of a 15-year-old girl.
The girl’s father, identified as 44-year-old Basant Kol, had died after reportedly being bitten by a snake while sleeping. Soon afterward, his teenage daughter also fell seriously ill and died while being taken for medical treatment.
While the family was preparing to perform the girl’s last rites, police reached the cremation ground and stopped the cremation. Suspecting that the teenager’s death could also have been linked to a snakebite, investigators recovered the body and sent it for postmortem examination.
Father Dies During Treatment
According to Sihora police station in-charge Pratiksha Marko, Basant Kol was reportedly bitten by a snake during the night while he was asleep.
His family took him to a hospital for treatment, but his condition deteriorated and he died during treatment.
Around the same period, Basant’s 15-year-old daughter reportedly developed sudden health complications. Her condition worsened rapidly, and she was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Family Was Preparing for the Cremation
The family reportedly linked the girl’s death to the shock of losing her father and proceeded with preparations for her funeral.
However, police officials questioned whether the explanation fully accounted for the teenager’s sudden death. One possibility being examined is whether she too may have suffered a snakebite.
Based on this suspicion, a police team reached the cremation ground before the last rites could be completed.
Body Taken From Cremation Ground
Police stopped the cremation and conducted the required proceedings before sending the girl’s body for postmortem.
Following the examination, the body was handed back to the family. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and begun an investigation.
The postmortem report is expected to provide crucial information about the actual cause of death. Investigators will determine their next course of action based on the medical findings and other evidence collected during the inquiry.
For now, police have not confirmed that the teenager died due to a snakebite, and the exact cause of her death remains subject to the postmortem findings.
